The grand prize for the contest is 2 million yen (about $18,000 USD), and Konami will offer to publish works that can be commercialized. The first stage of Gradius Rebirth is a near-exact visual replica of the first area of Gradius, except with new enemies, new level design, and a new gimmick. Like the other ReBirth titles, this game is also a throw-back to the 16-bit era, and takes inspiration from various titles in the Gradius franchise, including the Nemesis and Lifeforce titles. Gradius ReBirth is a part of the ReBirth series from Konami on the Wii, which includes old-school revisits to the Contra and Castlevania franchises.
